A 50-year-old biker was killed in a collision with a deer on Route 31 in Somerset County on Sunday, November 8, 2009. According to reports, the motorcycle slid into a ditch after the impact.
Deer are a significant threat to safety, both for bikers and those riding in cars but are significantly more dangerous to the motorcycle rider. According to one motorcycle magazine, impact with a deer results in a fatality for nearly 85% of those on motorcycles and less than two percent for those in other vehicles. The article further notes that the period from October through November is traditionally the most dangerous time for a potential impact with a deer.
