Rottweiler attacks and kills TV star’s stepchild

with 4 comments

A Rottweiler owned by a star on the reality show “Ax Men” attacked and killed his stepdaughter on Sunday.  The four-year old girl was found injured in her yard by her mother and taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.  The family owns two Rottweilers, both of which were quarantined after this incident.

The tragic loss sustained by this family is not an isolated event.  Government studies show that Rottweilers and Pitbulls are involved in more fatal attacks by dogs than any other breed.  A disproportionate number of children are involved in fatal dog attacks.  The Center for Disease Control Provides the following information on how to avoid dog bites for children:

  • Do not approach an unfamiliar dog.
  • Do not run from a dog and scream.
  • Remain motionless (e.g., “be still like a tree”) when approached by an unfamiliar dog.
  • If knocked over by a dog, roll into a ball and lie still (e.g., “be still like a log”).
  • Do not play with a dog unless supervised by an adult.
  • Immediately report stray dogs or dogs displaying unusual behavior to an adult.
  • Avoid direct eye contact with a dog.
  • Do not disturb a dog who is sleeping, eating, or caring for puppies.
  • Do not pet a dog without allowing it to see and sniff you first.
  • If bitten, immediately report the bite to an adult.

    1. Studies show that pitbulls and rottweilers are involved in more fatal attacks than any other breed. True. But, pitbulls cause double the amount of fatal attacks than rottweilers. People need to understand that not all rottweilers are aggressive. And usually become aggressive due to things like, abuse, neglect, lack of training and lack of socialization. No child should be left alone with a dog at any point. Children dont have ‘dog etiquette’. And parents and dog owners need to train both, their child and dog, in an appropriate manner. And avoid these tragedys from happening in the first place.

This statement is very true, but also the same for pitbulls. They become mean when people do not spend time and money training them and leave them unsociable. Any dog can be mean , not just pitbulls.

    2. The problem is really stupid people…as it always is. It runs my blood cold to think of the people out there who have marginal intelligence and not a CLUE as to how to properly socialize and train a Rottweiler. No doubt because of all the stupid people, this breed will eventually be banned.

      • I agree, the problem with any dog is most often the owner, whether they fail to properly train a dog or whether they fail to properly control a dog.
